The Juvéderm collection of injectables, also known generally as Juvéderm, is a group of hyaluronic, acid-based dermal fillers that work to correct a variety of skin concerns. Because Juvéderm is made with a synthetic version of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is found naturally occurring in the body, it is an extremely safe cosmetic option and has a low risk of side effects or allergy. Typically for Juvéderm, we ask that you avoid sun exposure for a few days prior to treatment. We will be unable to administer the injections if the skin is irritated (even a mild sunburn), so it’s important to take care of your skin leading up to your appointment.
Most Juvéderm appointments only take about 30 minutes to complete. First, your skin will be cleansed and a topical numbing cream or ice pack will be applied if needed. Then, your master injector will administer the selected Juvéderm formula or formulas with a fine needle. Along with your original treatment plan, we will create a maintenance plan looking forward. After a skilled lip injection session, there is an expected timeline for recovery that is detailed below. It is important to have an awareness of the typical progression, so you know what to expect.
Right after your procedure, you will most likely feel some slight tenderness right at the injection sites. This irritation usually resolves in a few hours and there usually isn’t a great deal of swelling right after the procedure.
On day one, most patients see extensive swelling that is uncomfortable or even concerning. Keep in mind, swelling is totally normal, and although it may seem extreme, it should resolve on its own in just a few days.
The peak of swelling should have passed by the second day, although it will be apparent. Sensitivity at the injection sites should have significantly diminished.
By day three, you should see a dramatic reduction in swelling and will likely start to see a sneak peek of the final results. You might also notice some bruising or lumps. These are both normal side effects and typically resolve on their own in just a few days.
At the two-week point, you should no longer be seeing dramatic daily changes. Bruising, swelling, and lumps should all be resolved.
