At our medspa in Denver Dysport is used to treat dynamic wrinkles that form as a result of making facial expressions. It is not suitable for static wrinkles, which are permanently etched into the skin. How can you tell the difference? It’s easy. Furrow your eyebrows as if you are angry, and notice if the 11 lines between the brows disappear a few hours later. If you have wrinkles on the outer corners of the eyes (crow’s feet), smile and notice if the wrinkles smooth out after a while. The same can be done for forehead wrinkles by raising your eyebrows.
Another way to tell if you have dynamic wrinkles is to look in the mirror immediately after you wake up in the morning. Since you are unlikely to make facial expressions while asleep, an absence of wrinkles in the a.m. means you have dynamic wrinkles that can be easily treated with Dysport injections.
Dysport has a lighter formulation, so more units are required to see comparable results to Botox. Each Dysport unit is cheaper for this reason. The FDA recommends at least two units of Dysport to equal one unit of Botox. However, in practical experience, most patients really need three Dysport units to achieve the results of Botox. While Dysport is less costly per unit, the total cost of treatment works out to about the same as Botox — with the final cost of Dysport often being slightly less.
